92220 1962-09-17 High Wycombe
BR Standard class 9F 2-10-0 No 92220 Evening Star passes through High Wycombe station with a Banbury to Old Oak Common freight on September 17, 1962.
Peter Kerslake adds "A classic example of railway photography at its very best as 92220 "Evening Star" is expertly captured on film here at High Wycombe with that high wall providing a first class backdrop to a splendid image.
With the date shown as being the 17th September of 1962 this photograph is interesting and raises questions. 92220 went to Bath Green Park in early August 1962 but only stayed there officially until the first week of October, being re-allocated to Old Oak on 6th October. Here it has no shed plate attached so the Green Park fitters have already removed it before losing their loco. It was seen working local passenger services following the cessation of the 1962 Summer Services and her working the final "Pines Express" on the 8th September of 1962. Strangely re-allocation to Bath Green Park came in August 1963 working on the Somerset and Dorset lines until the very end of October 1963 upon which she went back home to Wales in November when she was transferred to Cardiff East Dock, her former home at Cardiff Canton having closed to steam in September of 1962.
Ending her days in service at Cardiff East Dock "Evening Star" suffered accident damage in or about March of 1965 and was accordingly withdrawn, being towed to Severn Tunnel Junction and destined for a local breaker's yard, but happily steps to preserve her were in hand and she was spared destruction, being overhauled at Crewe in 1967 and thereafter working on the Keighley and Worth heritage line from July of 1973 until May of 1975, and she presently can be seen at York museum"."
