92220 1963-08 near Newport

Dated from 1963 this rather stormy August view has 92220 Evening Star on what would have been a customary duty at this late period in her life , namely a substantial looking mixed freight , the engine now being allocated to Cardiff East Dock Motive Power Depot . Her earlier days had seen 92220 allocated to Cardiff Canton from newly built by Swindon in March of 1960 , the locomotive making frequent appearances on the tightly timed passenger workings between Cardiff and Paddington and often making out and back return workings on a daily basis following a turn round at Ranelagh Yard adjacent to Paddington station . Canton closed to steam in September of 1962 and Evening Star had already during the previous month been sent to Bath Depot on the Somerset and Dorset main line in order to assist with that year's Summer Service passenger workings which were becoming increasingly heavily loaded with the need for regular Double Heading in both directions between Bath and Bournemouth . 1963 saw 92220 returned back to Cardiff as through services formerly run over the Somerset and Dorset network ceased with effect from the end of the 1962 Summer Timetable , and the locomotive had accordingly been reduced to working local All Stations duties from September of 1962 , but her return to Cardiff was marred by an accident whilst on East Dock Depot in early 1965 , and she was accordingly withdrawn from service with serious damage to her front end. Although shortly thereafter being towed to a Severn Tunnel Junction breaker's yard Evening Star had already been selected for preservation and she happily escaped being disposed of , being restored at Crewe Works two years' later in 1967 and is now within the National Railway Museum at York
