Departing on the 1.10pm to Templecombe. Having been transferred away from Cardiff Canton upon its closure to steam in September of 1962 Evening Star went to Bath in order to work the Somerset and Dorset long distance passenger sevices over that splendid and scenic line and in anticipation that use of Standard 9F locomotives might reduce the need for double heading , particularly during the busy Summer months , and the 9 F 'S did , in fact , handle most of the Summer Saturday workings without the need for a pilot engine. Put to good use on these duties during the Summer of 1962 Evening Star was sadly relegated to local stopping duties on the line as seen here when those Summer Services ended and all through passenger workings were thereafter diverted away from the old S .& D. route , running between the North of England and the South Coast via Banbury , Oxford and Basingstoke . All passenger services on the old Somerset and Dorset ended in March of 1966 This fine view in September 1963 of Evening Star would be from the end of her brief period in service on the Somerset and Dorset line as following the end of the 1962 Summer Timetable all long distance through passenger workings in both directions between the North Midlands and Bournemouth were rerouted to run instead via Banbury , Oxford , and Basingstoke thus depriving the Somerset and Dorset of its popular , heavily loaded long distance passsenger traffic . Consequently the Standard Class Nines , including Evening Star were reduced as shown here to working local stopping services and Evening Star was accordingly sent back to Wales and to Cardiff East Dock Depot in late 1963 , her earlier home at Cardiff Canton having by then been closed to steam a year earlier .
