92079 1960s Blackwell

92079 1960s Blackwell

The lady with her shopping waits for the ‘9F’ to reverse over the foot crossing at Blackwell to return down to Bromsgrove.No.92079 was carrying the F10 Target board and it is not fitted with the headlight from Big Bertha . The headlight was removed from 92079 during a visit to Swindon Works for boiler repairs in 1959. It was never refitted. 92079 remained working on the Lickey Incline until transferred to Birkenhead in October 1963; all this time without the headlight, so it is more likely, especially considering the state of the loco, that this photograph was taken in the 1960s and not 1950s. Legend has it that there was a Brakesman on permanent duty up at Blackwell to ensure that guards on down freights pinned down their wagons' brakes before setting off down the Lickey , and to assist them in this duty so as to avoid unecessary delay . The rather substantial brick built hut , with its impressive chimney , situated here on the down side , and right at the summit might well have been his refuge....perhaps the lady has just taken him his dinner !
