92206 1960-09 near Chilcompton

BR 9F 2-10-0 No 92206 with the up 'Pines Express' near Chilcompton in September 1960.

Peter Kerslake says "In an effort to reduce double heading on the Somerset and Dorset line for the 1960 Summer Services Standard 92204 was sent to Bath Green Park depot by the Bristol based authorities and evaluated on the line from the end of March 1960, its success in handling a 350 ton working unassisted across the Mendips between Bournemouth and Bath being such that it was joined by 92203, 92205 and 92206 on the Somerset and Dorset, heralding the use of many of the class until services came to an end in late 1962.
This image confirms that the "9F's" could work the line unassisted, although Summer Saturdays often saw them working with a pilot engine when the heavily loaded additional services demanded."
