40001 1951-02-17 Willesden

Fowler 2-6-2T No 40001 stands in steam at Willesden shed on a very gloomy 17th February 1951. Originally numbered 15500 by the LMS when built in 1930, it later became No 1 and then 40001. They originally had inside steam pipes and a taller narrower chimney. Never great performers, the wide chimney and outside steam pipes arose from attempts to render improvements but with only marginal success. All 70 engines in the class had been withdrawn from service by November 1962.
