65894 1964-08-07 Coxwold

In the days when small, quiet and highly unremunerative stations were commonplace, scenes like this taken at Coxwold, North Yorkshire on closure day, 7th August 1964 of the final 'pick-up goods' working were becoming all to familiar. The 'old' railway couldn't last and did not, for reasons too well documented to repeat here. Now fortunately preserved since its withdrawal from York MPD in Sept. 1967, NER designed Worsdell 'J27' 0-6-0 No. 65894 built at Darlington in Sept. 1923 as LNER No. 2392 is picking up the last few wagons in this delightful but sad photograph.
