4109 1956-09-29 Newton Abbot shed
Peter Kerslake writes "A Saturday visit from my home in Plymouth to Newton Abbot shed provided a nice close up shot of their 4109 at rest between duties. Newton Abbot on Summer Saturdays was always well worth visiting as many locomotives from Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury would come off at that location and would, therefore, not work further west down to Plymouth. The station was also a scene of hectic activity with the Torquay line expresses also coming through there as well as the far West (Cornwall) workings. 4109 probably had a varied life as there were plenty of freight duties in the area as well as the need to provide banking assistance for Westbound freights from Aller Junction to the summit of the nearby Dainton Bank, on the Plymouth line. This was probably its main duty."
