10000 10001 1950 Rugby
The two LMS-designed diesel-electric prototypes make another contrast with the previous two pictures taken at the same position outside Rugby. The ”terrible twins” are in what looks like an early appearance after heavy general repairs over the winter of 1950/1. No.10000 has lost the cast LMS letters which it had from new until it went into Derby Works in November 1950.
Records show that 10000 and 10001 experienced train heating boiler problems during the winter of 1949 , relegating the pair of Diesels to freight duties during that period in time , but by mid 1950 they were back working express passenger duties on the West Coast Main Line , running between Euston and Glasgow as seen in this splendid picture.
Introduced following a meeting at Stafford on 20th May 1946 held between officials from the LMS and the English Electric Company it had been intended from the outset that the Diesels would be capable of working on their own and additionally in tandem, with the communicating doors providing access for the crews between both locomotives.
Initially the locomotives had been rostered working in tandem on duties between Euston and Carlisle but following the introduction of the "Royal Scot" express on 1st June 1949 these workings were extended to and from Glasgow although both made appearances on additional workings between Euston and Blackpool.
