GWR 3521 class 4-4-0 No 3540 stands in the centre road at Bath in c1901. This about 1901 when first rebuilt and before about 1905 due to the square lane sockets.
Peter Kerslake says "Both 3540's driver and fireman have posed for the cameraman here on the through road at Bath Spa station , the driver with an oil pump in hand and a passenger brake van coupled behind the tender.
Built from 1887 originally with an 0-4-2 wheel arrangment and side water tanks the 20 members of the "3521" class were added to in 1888/89 by an additional 20 which went to Newton Abbot and Plymouth, all of which were constructed to the broad gauge.
From 1899 they began to be converted to a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement with about half remaining on West country services and half at Bristol Bath Road. The first to be condemned was 3541 in 1913 with the last being withdrawn in 1934."
