18” gauge 0-4-0 ‘Wren’ at Horwich works. It was the last survivor of 8 engines built to move components around the works, all of which were named and constructed in the period 1887-1901 (Wren built by Beyer Peacock in 1887.) The strongbox on the tender was used for distributing wage packets. The 18” gauge railway was abandoned in 1965 on closure of Horwich works to steam but ‘Wren’ was rescued and is currently in the National Railway Museum, York in BR livery, which it never carried during its active existence.
