NG Wren 1952 Horwich Works-SA-KW

Ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 18" gauge works shunter 0-4-0 Saddletank 'Wren'. One of eight to this design, it was built by Beyer Peacock of Manchester in November 1887 and withdrawn into preservation in 1962. The driver is Charlie England who had charge of 'his' locomotive for many years. Of particular interest is the fully lined-out and riveted tank in this 1952 view, later replaced with one without rivets (retained to this day) and unlined. The others in the class were 'Robin', 'Dot', 'Fly', Mouse', 'Midget', 'Wasp' and 'Bee'.
