L&Y Stationary Boilers 1963-06 Blackpool Central

L&Y Stationary Boilers 1963-06 Blackpool Central

The use of obsolete locomotives as stationary boilers (usually for carriage heating) was a widespread practice throughout the steam era. Regrettably, the presevation era that might have rescued some historic engines was still in its infancy. This pair of ancient L&Y Barton Wright 0-4-4 Tanks (now 0-2-4s!) were still in use at Blackpool in June 1963. They would have been periodically hauled back to Horwich Works for overhaul with their extended chimneys strapped along the boiler top. A sight to behold no doubt!
