8783 1938-05-14 King's Cross
Ex-Great Eastern Railway J. Holden 'D16/2' class 4-4-0 No. 8783. Built at Stratford in July 1923 as GER No. 1783, rebuilt from class 'D16/2' to class 'D16/3' in December 1939 and withdrawn in August 1958 as BR No. 62614.
This is one of the two so-called 'Royal Clauds' (8783 & 8787) that were kept in immaculate condition for Royal Train duties, often to take Royalty from London to their Sandringham estates. She is seen here at King's Cross Station in May 1938. Note her copper-capped chimney!
