8507 1927-07-06 Stratford Works Royal Visit
This is a truly superb photograph taken at Stratford Works on 6th July 1937 when their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary paid a Royal visit.
The locomotive is believed to be immaculate ex-GER 'B12' 4-6-0 No. 8507 but it is the foreground that fascinates. Their Majesties are seated on a low plinth in front of which are a pair of 'LNER' mats (what price in railwayana?).
Sir Nigel Gresley is front row 4th from the left and the LNER's Chairman, William Whitelaw is 8th from the left behind the King. Other identifications are welcome please! Observers hang from every vantage point and the real oddity is, that this appears to be a 'safety' photograph taken from off centre with no-one saying "Birdie" to the camera!
