GNR 990 1953-09-20 King's Cross

There are certain events in railway history that simply cannot be re-created for a multitude of reasons. The centenary celebration of Doncaster's 'Plant' (1953-1953) is a classic example. The two magnificent ex-GNR Ivatt 'Atlantics', 'C2' class No. 990 and 'C1' class No. 251 were restored to steam and double headed from King's Cross to Doncaster. That these two wonderful machines are now 'stuffed and mounted' (and likely to remain so) is a tragedy. This is the scene at King's Cross on Sunday 20th September 1953 as the pair prepare for departure. Oh to have been there!
