18100 1952 Chippenham

18100 1952 Chippenham

Peter Kerslake says "18100 is approaching Chippenham station from the cutting in the distance, with both home and distant signals cleared and with the branch line to Calne going off on the extreme right. 18100 is on the 11.15 a.m 'Merchant Venturer' from Paddington to Bristol. The gas turbine will work back to Paddington in the afternoon at the head of the 4.15 p.m. 'Bristolian'. This view dates probably from between April and August 1952 when 18100 was working on the Bristol services before it was moved to duties between Paddington and Plymouth. Reporting Number 142 was the customary number for this duty although it was sometimes 143 which appeared on the down 'Merchant Venturer' for some reason."
