18100 1953-11-22 Swindon Works

Peter Kerslake says "This was one of the last photographs taken of the Metropolitan Vickers Gas turbine at Swindon Works. Following several months working on the main line between Paddington and Bristol, 18100 was effectively taken out of service in late 1953, and was returned to Metropolitan Vickers at their Dukinfield factory in order to asess its suitability to burn a heavier fuel oil. This was an unsuccessful and in May 1956 the venture was abandoned and 18100 was converted into an all electric unit for driver training in conjunction with the electrification of the West Coast main line."
