7244 1962-08 Swindon Works

7244 1962-08 Swindon Works

Allocated to Swansea East Dock Misterton hall 6916 awaits entry into the works. Note the entrance to the subway.

Looking splendid here in new colours at Swindon Works following an overhaul and outside what I think was known as the " weighing shop " where post overhaul locomotives were weighed and reunited with their tenders , 7244 will doubtless return home to Wales once she's been on a couple of local " Running In " duties .
As were the locomotives from which the fifty four members of the " 7200 " class were rebuilt , namely the " 5205 " series of smaller freight locomotives , these impressive heavy freight engines had been designed and intended to work Welsh coal and mineral traffic with just six being found allocated away from Welsh Motive Power Depots in early 1956 , four being at Oxford and one each at Oxley and Bristol St. Philip's Marsh.
In the early postwar years three members of the class were despatched to Newton Abbot to undertake banking duties on Dainton bank , whilst 7253 performed similar tasks on the Lickey Incline although its bulk soon proved too much for Bromsgrove's limited platform clearances !
