7218 1950s Cardiff General
With an impressive formation of oil tank wagons in tow 7218 , one of Newport's complement of no less than thirteen of the class , shows her massive coal bunker to advantage in this photograph as she trundles through Cardiff General .
If that's a pram in the bunker then that's a mystery to be solved !
7218 was one of the first series of rebuilds by C.B. Collett from his original " 5205 " class of 2-8-0 heavy freight engines , such rebuilds having a 2-8-2 wheel formation together with extended coal and water provision , and eventually totalling fifty four in number .
In January of 1956 Newport had the most number of the class allocated there , with thirty five others spread over ten other Welsh Depots and just six allocated to establishments outside Wales .
