7215 1957 near Cardiff
Between Cardiff and Newport.
Peter Kerslake adds "A fine overhead portrait of the large mineral tank 7215 as she trundles along the outskirts of Cardiff with an impressive looking mixed freight at a time when she was shedded at Llanelly, a Motive Power Depot with long associations with the class and at a time when the whole class except four were to be found based within South Wales .
7215 had been rebuilt from 5290 in November of 1934 during the extensive conversion of many of the earlier " 5200 " examples which , following construction , had gone straight into being stored at Swindon Works due to the decline in demand for Welsh steam coal in the mid ' thirties.
In their later years members of the class were to be seen on longer freight duties from their South Wales haunts , venturing to Exeter and London , their increased coal capacity enabling them to do so , and the increase in demand for Welsh steel saw them working iron ore freights from the East Midlands down to the furnaces of their homeland."
