48437 1965-01-19 Gloucester Horton Road

Peter kerslake says "It was probably the fine and doubtless Ex Works condition that tempted me to capture on film 48437 basking in the sunlight on a strangely deserted Gloucester Horton Road Depot on 19th January of 1965 at a time when that Western Region Depot was also host to Midland Region locomotives, the nearby Barnwood Depot just across the road having by then closed.
Freights from the North and East Midlands working down to South Wales in particular were regularly and still in the hands of a variety of steam locomotives at this time, but 1965 was to be the final year for such workings as he remaining South Wales Motive Power Depots closed to steam, with Barnwood being used as a storage facility for condemned locomotives from a wide area being held there on their way to the Welsh breakers' yards".
