GWR Castle class 4-6-0 No 4073 Caerphilly Castle waits to leave Cardiff General with the 12 noon express to Paddington on February 2, 1957.
Peter Kerslake says "4073 has just this been transferred to Cardiff Canton following seven years at Bristol Bath Road and the Canton cleaners have worked their usual magic on their new arrival as it glistens in the sunshine at Cardiff General. There's an empty Reporting Number frame in position but even its two "Express Passenger" lamps look new . Canton's Top Link "Castles" and "Britannias" were invariably well turned out and there seems to have been a degree of competition between the cleaners here at Canton with those down the line at Swansea's Landore depot as the Landore "Castles" were also turned out in tip top condition when working the principal pasenger duties in the 'fifties and early 'sixties until it all went wrong at the end of 1965."
