5084 1959-04-08 Shrewsbury

Double-chimney Castle 4-6-0 No 5084 Reading Abbey has just arrived at Shrewsbury with the 'Cambrian Coast Express' from Paddington on April 8, 1959. The train was taken forward by 7811.

Peter Kerslake says "A splendid image of an immaculate 5084 "Reading Abbey", turned out to perfection by the cleaners at her home depot of Old Oak Common for this "Cambrian Coast Express" duty, this engine being rebuilt as a "Castle" from its original "Star" form by Swindon in February of 1937, and having been built as a "Star" in December of 1922, initially numbered 4064.
There's plenty going on here at the northern end of Shrewsbury station with its distinctive water hose extending out to engines on the through road, as one of the footplate crew tops up the tender, whilst the driver and helper have uncoupled 5084 from its train and already taken off one lamp from the engine's front.
Their train will now reverse away with a new engine on the other end with a couple of "wheel tappers" checking the stock further down before it departs, bound for Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, following which 5084 will run back tender first to Shrewsbury MPD for turning and servicing ready to work a later service back to Paddington.
"Reading Abbey" was a long standing Old Oak engine , being withdrawn from there in July of 1962."
