5074 1956-09-29 Cardiff General

Castle class 4-6-0 No 5074 Hampden about to take over the up 'Red Dragon' from Hall class 4-6-0 No 5974 Wallsworth Hall at Cardiff General on September 29, 1956.

Peter Kerslake says "Cardiff Canton's cleaners have done their usual fine job in turning out their own 5074 "Hampden" in pristine condition ready to take over the "Red Dragon" from the "Hall" here at Cardiff following its arrival from Swansea.
A Welsh engine for virtually all its life 5074 spent time housed at Canton, Landore, Neath and Cardiff East Dock before ending its days at Bristol in May 1964.
This will be an "Out and Back" duty for the "Castle" and its crew as after arriving at Paddington the engine will be turned and given a check over at Ranelagh Bridge depot, just outside Paddington, before it returns home to Cardiff later the same day."
