Brand new Castle 4-6-0 No 4080 Powderham Castle departs from Paddington with the 3.30pm express for Plymouth in 1924.

Peter Kerslake says "My goodness , they don't come much cleaner than this as a spotless 4080 "Powderham Castle" heads away from Paddington, newly built in the March of the year of this view so she has just entered service.
Shedded at Cardiff many years later "Powderham Castle" also saw service at Bristol Bath Road in the mid 'fifties and was destined to run a record for a "Castle" of nearly two million miles in service by December of 1963 before being withdrawn from Old Oak Common in August of 1964.
The smaller tenders of those early days looked rather out of place, their later versions with increased coal and water capacity greatly enhancing the appearance."
