5097 1955-06-30 Shrewsbury

GWR Castle class 4-6-0 No 5097 Sarum Castle enters Shrewsbury station with a Plymouth to Liverpool express on June 30, 1955.
Peter Kerslake says "One of just three "Castles" housed at Shrewsbury at this time 5097 "Sarum Castle" has probably worked back home from Newton Abbot on this "West to North" duty but will hand over to a Midland Region engine here, the Western Region's locomotives on these duties venturing no further northwards than Shrewsbury.
Moving in the early 1960's to Cardiff Canton 5097 was one of Canton's allocation moved across to East Dock when Canton closed in August of 1962, that move heralding the beginning of the end for such transferred engines and 5097 was condemned from there in March of 1963.
The massive and imposing signal box here at Shrewsbury is clear to see, what a location for any railway cameraman."
