D805 1959-06-16 Taunton

Class 42 No D805 stands in Taunton station with the down 'Royal Duchy' on June 16, 1959.

Peter Kerslake says "The sixth of the Swindon built Class 42 "Warship " D805 "Benbow" is at Taunton on the 1:30 p.m. "Royal Duchy" from Paddington with an impressive rake of chocolate and cream coaches, the class having been introduced in late 1958 when 38 were built at Swindon equipped with twin Bristol Siddeley - Maybach power units coupled to twin Mekydro hydraulic transmission systems, a torque converter and four speed gearbox.
"Benbow" is clearly in fine condition in this view, the Swindon built members initially being rostered to the tightly timed passenger express workings between Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads."
