60111 1962 Grantham

Down train approaching Grantham, Grantham South box on the right.
60111 was fitted with deflector plates in 4/62 and withdrawn 12/62 so the photo must be in 1962.

60111 "Enterprise" had the distinction of being the very first "A3", having in 1927 been the forerunner of five of Gresley's original class "A1's" that year converted to class "A3", emerging with higher boiler pressures, improved valve settings and enlarged superheaters and heralding a rebuilding programme which lasted until 1949 when "Sir Visto" became the very last of the original "A1's" to be so rebuilt and the only unrebuilt example to come into B.R . ownership from the L.N.E.R. in 1948.
