SR push-pull 1959c Grain
Comments by Mike King
The final destination of the line, Grain, some time in 1959. The station was a simple two-platform affair within the refinery and was often only served by a couple of trains each day - used only by the workforce. The interesting feature here is the stock; two ex-SECR railmotor coaches as set 481 in crimson lake livery. There were eight such cars and as railmotors they were about as unsuccessful as most of their genre, being rebuilt in 1924 into four 2-coach sets. Nos.481/82 were sent to the Isle of Wight but returned a couple of years later and became SE section pull-push units in 1930, being used at Allhallows, Grain, Westerham and a few other Kent branches, while sets 513/514 became articulated pairs on the Sheppey Light Railway. Note the utilitarian brick-built signal box on the right.
