A Machynlleth engine , spotless 7803 " Harcote Manor " is adorned with the painted lamp brackets , smokebox door fittings , numberplate and buffers so characteristic of that shed's " Manors ".Machynlleth was the main shed to Aberystwyth which had a number of this class allocated there , those engines working northwards as shown here to Shrewsbury and southwards to Carmarthen , including rosters on the renowned "Cambrian Coast Express " which involved a morning run from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury with just an hour's turn round at Shrewsbury before the homeward run back to Aberystwyth later that same afternoon.Legend tells us that it had been the shedmaster at Aberystwyth , the renowned and highly respected Mr . Rowlands who was responsible for the splendid manner in which his " Manors "were turned out for the principal passenger workings on the former Cambrian lines and here we see a prime example with " Barcote Manor " looking her best .By the date of this fine view the " Manors " were all in fully lined out green livery , and in their final days on the Cambrian there is some suggestion that the cleaners at Aberystwyth and Machynlleth were assisted in their duties by a local band of enthusiastic volunteers in the same way as those who similarly " helped out " at Bath Green Park during the last days of the Somerset and Dorset workings. It's all passed into history now , but the story lingers on !
