44686 1960s Warrington
One of the final pair of Caprotti Class ‘5’s built in 1951, No. 44686 is crossing the viaduct over the Mersey with the C473 working according to the reporting number. The train is a motley collection of elderly stock including a GWR Collett All-Third as the second vehicle, and it will take the Chester route through Moore. To the extreme left can be seen Walton New Junction signal box which controlled movements over the three-track section from Warrington to the four heading south on the Chester and Crewe lines (which remained parallel until Acton Grange Junction). It also controlled the start of the Down Slow which ran to Warrington Bank Quay station. The picture was taken after No. 44686 was allocated to Llandudno Junction in May 1960 and as the Central Division reporting numbers are still in use it would be soon after that date.
