A Class R1 0-6-0T with cut-down boiler mountings which allowed passage through the 12ft height clearance Tyler Hill Tunnel (828 yds) on the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway -one of England’s earliest railways (1830). The line became freight only from 1931 and closed entirely in November 1951. The two R1s with the cut-down boiler mountings (which they had carried since 1890, -BR Nos 31010, 31339) remained so until withdrawal. 31339 built 1889; w/d June 1958.
