793 1930s Victoria

793 1930s Victoria

SR K Class 2-6-4T No A793 ‘River Ouse’ at London Victoria Station in 1925/6. The headcode indicates a train to Brighton via the Redhill avoiding/Quarry line.
After the Sevenoaks disaster of 1927 (which involved No A800 ‘River Cray’) all 20 of these engines were withdrawn from service. In 1928 they were converted to U Class 2-6-0s losing their names in the process. In tank engine form No A793 (built 1925 by Armstrong Whitworth) had only a 2 year existence. The Westinghouse pumps fitted to Nos A791-A799 were for use on Victoria-Brighton and Eastbourne services. This locomotive in rebuilt form was finally withdrawn by BR in 1964 as No 31793.
