6233 1948c Euston
Still with plenty of steam after its arrival at Euston 6233 Duchess of Sutherland rests alongside rebuilt Patriot 45514 Holyhead. This picture was taken in mid-1948, after the Patriot had been renumbered in May and before 6233 in September. Duchess of Sutherland had been fitted with smoke deflectors in August 1946 and was repainted into LMS 1946 lined black in October 1947.
Peter Kerslake says "Not the best place for the railway photographer but within the gloomy depths of Euston. Built in July 1938 "Duchess of Sutherland" was in service until February 1964 before being purchased by Butlin's for static display at their Heads of Ayr Holiday Camp where it remained until 1976. Thanks to the efforts of the Princess Royal Locomotive Trust 46233 is still with us today and working on the main line.
