If you wanted to see an iconic sight during a July 1954 visit to Carlisle's Citadel Station, this magnificent pair of ex-LMS Stanier 'Coronation' 4-6-2s would perfectly fit the bill! The down 'Royal Scot' is about to have Camden's No. 46241 'City of Edinburgh' relieved by Polmadie's No. 46223 'Princess Alice' for the onward journey to Glasgow.
Both locomotives were built at Crewe in July 1937 (46223) and April 1940 (46241) and withdrawn in Oct. 1963 and Sept. 1964 respectively. 46223 would gain a full smokebox the following year but 46241 would be amongst the last to lose the sloping smokebox in early 1958.
