The now preserved Wainwright D 4-4-0 about half a mile north of Mayfield station on the “Cuckoo Line” (between Polegate and Redgate Mills Junction) on a 1:52 climb to “Argos Hill” tunnel – hence a good position for smoke and steam effects. St Dunstans Church on the sky line.
The use of a D class was unusual on this line (it’s a Tonbridge Shed duty) though these and the rebuilt D1 class regularly worked on Tonbridge –Brighton trains.
