40087 1953-03 Lichfield

Stanier ‘Class 3’ 2-6-2T No.40087 in March 1953 departs southwards from Lichfield Trent Valley. No.40087 was allocated to Nuneaton shed from January 1953 until withdrawn at the end of 1962. In the background is a water tower on the Midland Railway line to Lichfield City and the J & C H Evans & Co (Trent Valley) Maltings which has disappeared in the later photographs on the following pages. Brewing had been the most important industry in Lichfield from the late-19th century onwards.
