On The Merchant Venturer from Paddington to Bristol TM and Weston Super Mare. Estimated date.
Trevor Tremethick adds "I think this picture is actually early 1950s. 1002 is shown with a single chimney; she was fitted with the standard double chimney 6/58 which is how I remember her as I was a Falmouth boy and Penzance, Truro and St Blazey were my local sheds. 1002 was a Penzance engine from 5/53 so I would date this picture (given also the train she is working) as probably being between May 1951 and March 1953 when 1002 was a Bristol Bath Road engine. My research suggests that the Paddington-Bristol-Weston-Super-Mare 'Merchant Venturer' train was introduced in May 1951. The external condition of the locomotive also suggests Bristol."
