759 1920s York
Ex-North Eastern Railway Worsdell 'S' (LNER 'B13') class 4-6-0 No. 759. Built at Gateshead in March 1909 as NER No. 759 and withdrawn in October 1938.
This 1920s view of the southern end of York Station was to change out of all recognition over the next 40 years. Signal boxes, semaphore gantries, running-in boards, gas lighting and advertising billboards would all be swept away. Remarkably, the superb old roundhouses survived, but in an increasingly dilapidated state until their eventual demolition in the early 1960s. There's a wonderful and varied rake of coaches behind 759 which appear to be of NER origin - identification anyone?
