63628 1960s York MPD

63628 1960s York MPD

This is a very typical early 1960s scene in the ash-strewn yard at York MPD. A crewman is boarding his ex-GCR Robinson 'O4/8' 2-8-0 No. 63628 one of very few 'O4s' actually built by the Great Central. It has had a Thompson 100A boiler fitted and has thus lost its graceful original Robinson chimney. It is alongside a BR Peppercorn 'K1' 2-6-0 No. 62065 and an unidentified Class 40 diesel. 63628 was built at Gorton in March 1919 as GCR No. 8 and was withdrawn in Sept. 1965. 62065 was built by NBL of Glasgow in Jan. 1950 and withdrawn in Mar. 1967.
