61317 1954-06-03 Woodhead

On Thursday 3rd June 1954, the days of steam through Woodhead Tunnel were numbered as the new twin line bore of the electrified route was opened. On that day, LNER-designed Thompson B1 No. 61317 makes a headlong charge uphill towards the sulphrous depths with an eastbound train for Sheffield. 61317 was built by NBL of Glasgow in May 1948 and would be withdrawn in Sept. 1962.
