61247 1950s York Station

61247 1950s York Station

The naming policy of Thompson's B1s was curious. Various species of mostly obscure African Antelopes were chosen, then he names of an equally obscure selection of LNER Directors were randomly applied to the class. Thus were the traveling public left to puzzle over the origins of names such as 'Jairou' or 'Strang Steel'. Even today, names like these need research to decipher! Here is ex-LNER B1 No. 61247 'Lord Burghley' seen in the 1950s returning from from York's MPD to the station for its next duty. 61247 was built by NBL of Glasgow in Oct. 1947 as LNER No. 1247 and was withdrawn in June 1962. p.s. David Cecil was Lord Burghley - look him up!
