61189 1964 Low Moor MPD
The ex-L&YR MPD at Low Moor, on the outskirts of Bradford was an interesting place to visit in the latter days of steam. The shed always seemed to have a good variety of ex-LMS and LNER types allocated or just visiting. Here in 1964, are one locomotive from each of those two 'Big 4' constituents. Ex-LNER Thompson 'B1' 4-6-0 No. 61189 has lost its 'Sir William Gray' nameplates whilst a grubby ex-LMS Stanier 'Black 5' 4-6-0 No. 44818 is seen alongside. 61189 was built by Vulcan Foundry in Aug. 1947 as LNER No. 1189 and was withdrawn in May 1967. 44818 was built at Derby in Nov. 1944 as LMS No. 4818 and was withdrawn in June 1968. The site of Low Moor shed is now a pleasant wooded country park, worth a visit but with not a hint of its railway heritage.
