61165 1952-01 Sheffield

Somewhat uneasy bedfellows in the yard outside Sheffield Victoria are BR 'EM1' Bo-Bo Electric No. 26026 and ex-LNER Thompson 'B1' 4-6-0 No. 61165. This view from October 1952 shows the early transition period from steam haulage to the ill-fated electrification of the Woodhead route to Manchester that lasted barely two decades - at enormous public expense. 26026 was built at Gorton in Jan. 1952 and was withdrawn in July 1981. 61165 was built by Vulcan Foundry in May 1947 as LNER No. 1165 and was withdrawn in Nov. 1964.
