60517 1961-07-24 York Holgate

The Holgate platforms at the south end of York were built for race day specials to avoid congestion in the main station. By July 1961 they had become redundant, a victim of the motor car, and were being demolished. Ex-LNER Thompson A2 No. 60517 'Ocean Swell' is leaving the city with an up express passing under the huge Holgate Road girder bridge. 60517 was built at Doncaster in Nov. 1946 as LNER No. 517 and was withdrawn in Nov. 1962.
