60157 1960s York Severus Junction
Another York location that eluded most photographers was Severus Junction named after Lucius Septimius Severus, a Roman emperor who died at Eboracum (York) in 211. Complete with lineside flower beds, this is where the lines northbound from York Station were joined by the freight 'avoidng' lines (seen on the right) that had bypassed the station. BR Peppercorn 'A1' 4-6-2 No. 60157 'Great Eastern' leans to the curve with a down express on an unknown date in the 1960s. The large water tower at York's Leeman Road MPD can just be glimpsed on the extreme left. 60157 was built at Doncaster in Nov. 1949 and was withdrawn in Jan. 1965.
