Ex-London, Brighton & South Coast Railway R.J. Billinton 'E4' class 0-6-2 Tank No. 32484. Built in Brighton in April 1899 as LB&SCR No. 484 'Hackbridge' and withdrawn in September 1960.

This fascinating scene show only too well that many of Britain's lesser locomotive sheds, such as this example at Horsham in West Sussex, did not have the luxury of sophisticated servicing and coaling facilities. Seen in 1960, the task involved hand loading of coal from wagon to 'skip' and then hoisted by steam crane to be hand unloaded yet again into the locomotive's bunker. It was a laborious and dirty job, not to be tinted with any glasses of light pink hue!
