30855 1959-04-05 Southampton Canute Road

Ex-Southern Railway Maunsell 'Lord Nelson' class 4-6-0 No. 30855 'Robert Blake'. Built at Eastleigh in November 1928 as SR No. 855 and withdrawn in September 1961.

The sight of a 4-6-0 crossing an ungated main road in a large city is scarcely believable in our H&S obsessed and cotton wool padded society. With Southampton Terminus Station (closed September 1966) seen on the right, 'Robert Blake' happily crosses Canute Road, Southampton in April 1959. The small shiney object on the road in front of the leading driving wheel is - a warning handbell! ©
