In May 1927, the most renowned of William Stroudley's London, Brighton and South Coast Railway 'B1' class of 0-4-2s No. 214 'Gladstone' had been restored by the Southern Railway to the full glory of its LB&SCR livery. It was the Stephenson Locomotive Society's members that contributed to this first ever privately funded preserved locomotive. No. 214 was built at Brighton in Dec. 1892 and was withdrawn in Apr. 1927 as SR No. 618. It now resides in the NRM at York. Note the ex-LB&SCR 6,700 volt AC catenary and Pullman coaches above the yard.
